A Sure-fire Trick to Scale Your Career
Hey! Another warm welcome to you as you read the first edition of my newsletter…(where’s that dancing emoji at?) Y’all are the real gees…
I picked today’s topic because I wanted to share a little bit of what worked for me and hopefully, it works for you too.
I used to work in HR, or maybe I still do. But I’d always been someone with big dreams and I knew I didn’t want a basic career. I wanted to do more than filing employee documents, raising vouchers for staff to get paid, walking new employees around the company, and monitoring the clock-in machine to ensure no one got in late.
I wanted more. Not necessarily the Head-of-HR kind of more, but the kind where I’m recognised both locally and internationally and my work is making a lot more difference. Of course, money was very important and I was not going to get the kind I wanted, doing what I did.
So, I started thinking of specialising. Tech was and still is, the new oil and if I could find a way to leverage IT to accelerate my HR career, then I might be able to get what I want.
I also discovered that some aspects of HR were more in demand both locally and internationally, aspects such as Technical Recruitment, HR Data Analysis, as well as Compensation and Benefits.
So with hours of research, I discovered that I could specialise in talent acquisition. A more beautiful discovery I made was that I could go further and specialise in technical talent acquisition. Of course, my strategy worked and here I am today, working as a Technical Recruiter.
Now, I’m sure you’ve probably asked yourself thousands of times how you can take your career to the next level. I’m here to tell you that one way to do it is by being a specialist; by creating your niche.
If you are not a Software Engineer, Product Designer, or Data Analyst, consider specialising in any area of your career that is more recognised globally or tech-inclined.
If you are in customer support/service, consider specialising in Technical Support, Client Relationship, Key Account Management, or even as a Product Specialist.
Are you a sales/marketing agent? Product marketing, tech and B2B sales are booming career paths. As a lawyer, there are several career prospects in tech law that you can consider.
In essence, focusing on specialisation within your generalist career may be the card you need to play to win in your career. After deciding on the specialisation, the next step would be to get the requisite knowledge that will help you land your next job.
Register for online courses, network with industry leaders, subscribe to blogs and newsletters relevant to your chosen specialisation and then get active on LinkedIn.
However, it is not a necessity for you to specialise, and this newsletter is not about dissing generalists. You can still be a generalist and have a very successful career.
Lastly, getting work experience is also important, but how do you get a job without experience? Well, you will find out in my next newsletter :)
I can’t wait to get your feedback on how this trick has worked for you, so feel free to write to me back. I loooooove testimonials!
Till my next, sending loads of love and light your way :)
